Proceeds will benefit the family of the late blues artist Little Arthur
Duncan, who passed away on August 20, 2008 at the age of 74.
Blues harp player and singer Little Arthur Duncan was one of the few
remaining Chicago bluesmen who migrated from the South to the Windy City
during the 1950s, following in the footsteps of classic blues players
like Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Jimmy Reed and Howlin’ Wolf.
Born in 1934 in Indianola, Mississippi, he moved to Chicago at age 16
where he met Little Walter and was inspired to learn harmonica. He began
to play blues bars all over town at night, while holding down a
construction job during the day. Duncan
went on to own the Artesia Lounge on Lake Street, which relocated to
West Madison and reopened as the Backscratcher’s Social Club. The harp
player became a very popular house act and recorded for the Delmark,
Blues King, Random Chance, Cannonball and Severn labels.
